Responsibilities

The Operations Manager manages a high volume, fast paced, self-operated residential, multi concept “all-you-care-to-eat” dining center and three retail concepts. This position oversees the complete operation of multiple, unique food service concepts while maintaining thorough knowledge of all. This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Hospitality and Retail Services.


  • Support customers of The Commons by acting as a public relations liaison with customers and guests – is visible and accessible to guests throughout the shift to enhance the guest experience.
  • Communicate and/or document staff behavior issues with the AVP of HSCR for consultation and action.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with all direct-reporting full and part-time regular staff.
  • Demonstrate effective supervision of others in work production by providing clear instructions, effective criticism and redirection.
  • Ensure all employees/units are operating within the guidelines of the Pierce County Health Department.
  • Evaluate employee performance for direct reporting staff and temporary personnel, following guidelines of performance appraisal set by Human Resources.
  • Develop, maintain, and modify an effective orientation process for direct reporting employees.
  • Serve in key role as mentor for student employee and Student Manager programs.
  • Provide on the job training, including management techniques, appropriate disciplinary procedures, and professionalism.
  • Evaluate student management performance each semester, utilizing guidelines of performance appraisal outlined by Human Resources.
  • Incorporate links to academic coursework as part of training experience.
  • Manage and execute budgetary expectations and guidelines related to food and labor costs/general expenses, etc.
  • Control P&L, ensuring that responsible areas meet budget goals.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and customer base by attending conferences, classes, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Develop yearly list of individual initiatives.
  • Develop marketing initiatives for the overall facility; work closely with Marketing Manager to achieve initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong Word and Excel skills and familiarity with Project, Publisher, Microsoft Windows Office Suite and Google Docs.
  • Ability to multitask, have an extensive understanding of customer service principles and service recovery, and handle frequent interruptions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to be flexible to perform related duties and responsibilities during university breaks, summers, and catered events.
  • Three years of progressive experience in food service management.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid WA Food Handler’s Permit or ability to obtain one before beginning employment.
  • Valid driver’s license (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years).
  • Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, physical exam, drug screen (including marijuana), and pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training, and provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5-year Employment Abstract).
